Course - Post Graduate
Master of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology (3 yrs)

Duration: 3 years (5 semesters + 6 months internship)
Eligibility: BSc Life Sciences

Medical Laboratory Technology is an Allied Health specialty concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease through the use of clinical laboratory tests. Though the Medical Lab technologists spend less time with patients than doctors and nurses, medical laboratory professionals are just as dedicated to patients' health. As vital members of the health care team, medical laboratory professionals play a critical role in collecting the information needed to give the best care to an ill or injured patient. The fact is, the practice of modern medicine would be impossible without the tests performed in the laboratory.

Objectives of the Course:
This course aims to produce laboratory technicians who are academically sound and technically skilled. Students will be given sufficient training to examined blood samples, body fluids and other tissues samples. The role of a medical technologist is to assist doctors in the diagnostic process of identifying patient’s illnesses. They are concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases through the use of clinical laboratory tests.

About the course

Year

Course Description

Competencies

First Year

I &IISemester

The course intends to provide basic input to the students so that they have prior knowledge and be equipped with skills to guide them before they opt for the main disciplines.

The students will acquire knowledge and skills in Basic Sciences like Human Anatomy and Physiology, Biochemistry and Microbiology. Pharmacology will provide the student with an idea about the different drugs. Basic Patient care will help the student to develop hands on skills on how to handle patients.

Second Year

III  &IV Semester

The students will be taught subjects related to their course along with practicals. They will also be taught on Universal precautions, medical ethics, research methods and quality health system.

The students will acquire knowledge and learn various techniques of laboratory testing.

Third  Year

V  Semester

Students will be taught molecular and advanced techniques in laboratory diagnosis and there will be a continuation on research methods.  They will have to conduct a small project and are required to do journal presentation. The students are also made to teach the UG students.

The students will be able to conduct and design methods for project work. They will be able to enhance their skills in teaching.

Third  Year

6 months Internship

During this period the students will be trained to perform different methods of laboratory testing and analyzing various types of samples through postings in different laboratories of the hospital in which they are doing their internship. During this period they will also be conducting a project under the supervision of a guide.

The students will enhance and strengthen their practical skills and gain an in-depth experience in the different techniques that are involved with laboratory diagnosis along with quality control procedures`. The students will be able to collect, analyze and interpret data for their project report.

Course of study
Teaching is delivered by a combination of:

  • Theoretical knowledge: lectures, demonstration, seminars, computer aided learning and assignments.
  • Practical knowledge: practical classes, hands-on clinical experience in hospitals and rural healthcare. Training in other health institutions and internship.
