History

Tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in the world. Today, travel and tourism has acquired a significant place both economically and socially all over the world. Therefore, Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) realized the tourism potential in Meghalaya and the Northeast Region, hence it started the Department of Tourism on the 16th August 2008. The department started with 9 students and 2 faculty. The objective is to impart education, training and skills development that could absorb the unemployed educated youth and to protect and revitalize traditional arts and crafts and preserve its cultural heritage in the region.

Mission Statement

The Tourism Department endeavour is to transform students into professionals of global excellence by imparting knowledge and skills to help uplift the society through community involvement in tourism growth and development and help preserve culture, instilling pride and sustain the natural environment of Meghalaya and North-East India.

Duration: 4 years
Eligibility: Pass in +2 in any stream

About the course
The rapid growth of tourism worldwide has created challenges and opportunities for established and emerging tourism destinations. The tourism industry is in dire need of young professionals adept in management and entrepreneurial skills as well as specialist skills to be prerequisites for the sustained growth of the industry.   The BTA programme will offer students a platform to acquire the skills needed for advanced careers in the travel and tourism industry. The aim of the course is to provide students with the necessary foundation in management, logistics and marketing amongst others in the field of tourism

The course intends to introduce the students to the basic functioning and fundamentals of the Tourism Industry.

Core Learning

2nd year
3rd – 4th Semester

To expose the students to the Tourism Industry and to have a clear concept of Tourism Operations and Logistics in India.

Discipline Specific and Industry Integrated Learning

3rd year
5th – 6th Semester

To equip the students with knowledge in their focus areas.

Upon graduation, students can aspire for further studies and to enter the world of work as professionals in private and public sectors like tour agencies, tour operators, airlines and hotels.
