Master of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology in Microbiology

Duration: 2 ½ years (4 semesters and 6 months internship).
Eligibility: A graduate in BSc Medical Laboratory Technology (BScMLT)

MSc Medical laboratory Technology in Microbiology is a postgraduate course in an allied health profession with specialization only in Microbiology. The role of the technologist in this field is to aid the doctor or microbiologist to detect, diagnose and in prevention of diseases through the use of clinical laboratory tests. In addition to the running tests the technologist should also set up, clean laboratory equipments like centrifuge, microscopes etc they also take care to ensure that the laboratory is under the stipulated conditions viz room temperature is maintained daily, placement of laboratory equipments, quality control, testing of samples under correct  sterile conditions and preparation of laboratory solutions for diagnostic purposes.

Skills and attributes: The technologist should be disciplined and attentive. Like fire is a bad master, likewise chemicals and other equipments in the laboratory are good servants but very bad masters. He or she should be able to finish tasks with speed and accuracy, also to handle stress and make analytical judgment, interpret technical or scientific data, laboratory instrumentation, mechanical ability and ability to use computers.

First Year

I & II  semester

The students will be taught subjects such as Biochemistry and Haematology in addition to Microbiology along with practicals. Research methodology will also be taught in the second semester.

The students will acquire knowledge and learn techniques required in Biochemistry, Haematology and Microbiology laboratory testings.

Second Year

III & IVsemester

The students will be taught subjects related only to Microbiology along with practical. They will also be required to do journal presentation and teach the UG students.

The students will acquire knowledge and learn various techniques required in microbiology laboratory testings. They will also be able to enhance their skills in teaching.

 

 

6 months Internship

During this period the students will be trained to perform different methods of microbiological laboratory testings and analyzing various types of samples in the hospital in which they are doing their internship. During this period they will also be conducting a project under the supervision of a guide.

The students will enhance and strengthen their practical skills and gain an in-depth experience in the different techniques that are involved with microbiological laboratory diagnosis along with quality control procedures. The students will be able to collect, analyze and interpret data for their project report.

Course of study
Teaching is delivered by a combination of:

  • Theoretical knowledge: lectures, demonstration, seminars, computer aided learning and assignments.
  • Practical knowledge: practical classes, hands-on clinical experience in hospitals and rural healthcare. Training in other health institutions and internship.
