Bachelor of Optometry
Duration: Integrated 3+1 (3 Years academics, 1 year Clinical Internship includes 3 months observer ship at L. V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad)
Eligibility: Pass in Higher Secondary (or equivalent +2 examinations) with Physics, Chemistry and Biology

Optometry is an independent health care profession related to eye, optics of the eye and eye care. In other words Optometry is the study of vision and the visual system. Optometrists are health care professionals who specialize or have been trained in Optometry. Optometrists have the satisfaction of helping their patients care for the most valued human sense - sight. The responsibilities of the professional optometrist includes foremost being the primary eye care provider in the prevention of blindness as laid down by the WHO, visual problems, the diagnosis and management of defects of sight, refractive errors and the prescription of visual devices such as spectacles, contact lenses and low vision devices. The optometrist may be a health professional working with the health team in a hospital or community care setting or as a primary care practitioner working independently. Among the services optometrists provide are prescribing glasses, contact lenses, rehabilitating the visually impaired, diagnosing and treating ocular diseases.
In this course, students will be educated in the basic medical sciences, which underpin optometry and be trained to provide diagnosis and management of ocular problems, both physical and pathological, and to deal with a range of physiological and environmental factors that may have an impact on patient care. Students will also be trained to work with other health care professionals so patients will obtain the type of care most appropriate for them at the same time being exposed to the latest equipments in the eye care industry.

Competencies

1st year
1st & 2nd Semester

The course intends to provide basic input to the students so that they have prior knowledge and be equipped in skills to guide them before they opt for the main disciplines.

The students will acquire knowledge and skills in Basic Sciences like Human Anatomy and Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology. Pharmacology will provide the student an idea about the different drugs. Basic Patient care will help the student to develop hands on skills on how to handle patients.

2nd year
3rd & 4th Semester

Primary focus on Ocular Anatomy and Physiology besides introducing basic and core Optometry subjects, optics. Also basic clinical procedures will be covered

Comprehensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the eye and visual system. Knowledge of Optometry sciences both theoretical and practical.

3rd year
5th & 6th Semester

Further specialty subjects of Optometry, from contact lens to low vision to binocular vision. There will also be consistent focus on ocular diseases and a comprehensive course on public health and biostatistics both of which are inescapable in the modern health science.

Sustained knowledge on specialty areas of Optometry and further sharpening of clinical skills.

4th year
Internship

One Year Compulsory Rotatory Clinical Internship-Includes 3 Months Observership At L.V.Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. A Research Project Submission Is Compulsory In The Final Year.

Students will be able to:

  • Practice, enhance & strengthen their skills.
  • Collect, analyze, interpret data & write a project report.
  • Learning on Independent Handling of Patients

 

Course of study:
The course of study will include lectures, practical classes, hands-on clinical experience, seminars and computer-aided learning.

  • Theoretical knowledge: Lecture, demonstration, group discussion, guest lecturers, assignments, case studies Seminars & presentations.
  • Practical skills: Community camps, School eye screenings and 3 months observership to the world renowned L.V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. Also, compulsory Project research in the final year along with Case presentations & journal articles reviews besides the one year compulsory clinical internship.

Career prospects
Optometrist are foremost primary eye care providers and they can do this independently or, as a group practice where a group of Optometrist each with his/her own specialty work together and/or as a faculty in any eye or general hospital. Further, they are specially trained to identify and diagnose visual skill problems such as the inability to move, align, fixate and focus the eye while providing treatment for the same either through simple spectacles or specially designed prism spectacles.
Major MNCs related to eye care including pharmaceuticals ex, Bausch and Lomb, Carl Zeiss, Essilor, Kodak, Novartis just to name a few, hire Optometrist to develop new technologies in the field of Ophthalmic lens optics, contact lens, new pharmaceutical molecules/drugs and optical devices for low vision. Some Optometrist is also absorbed into the managerial positions in some of these MNCs.
Finally being a business entrepreneur is something Optometry has always been related to. From starting your own lens manufacturing company to frame production to contact lens, a good Optometrist should always have an eye on business.
