Bachelor of Science in Surgical Technology

Duration: 3 years (6 semesters) + 1 year internship.
Eligibility: Pass in Higher Secondary Science stream(or equivalent +2 examinations)
Surgical technologists (also called operating theatre technologists) are allied health professionals who are an integral part of the hospital team that provides surgical and care to patients in a variety of settings. Surgical technologists are integrated members of a surgical team who work in conjunction with the surgeon, anesthesiologist and nurse in order to provide quality patient care before, during, and after surgery. They are vital personnel who work side-by-side with the surgeon during a surgical procedure. They assist in operations under the supervision of surgeon or registered nurses. They help to setup the operating room with surgical instruments, equipments & other sterile supplies needed for the surgery.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

COMPETENCIES

First year
I&IISemester

The course intends to provide basic input to the students so that they have prior knowledge and be equipped in skills to guide them before they opt for the main disciplines.

The students will acquire knowledge and skills in Basic Sciences like Human Anatomy and Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology. Pharmacology will provide the student an idea about the different drugs. Basic Patient care will help the student to develop hands on skills on how to handle patients.

Second year
III&IV  semester

Students are provided basic foundation on surgical anatomy, operation theatre, surgical procedures, instrumentation, equipments, patient care & patient psychology & medical ethics.

Students will acquire skills on

  • Utilization & Sterilization of instruments, preparation of surgical trays.
  • Body land markings for incisions during surgery.
  • Pre-operative care.
  • Post- operative patient care.
  • Application of ethical, legal practices in their profession.

Third year
V&VIsemester

Students are provided with advance knowledge & skills on Surgical procedures, techniques, instrumentations & equipment’s, basic research methods & quality in health system.

Students will acquire skills on

  • Performing minor surgical procedures.
  • Scrubbing & assisting during surgery.
  • Circulation of instruments during surgery.
  • Quality control in health care.

Fourth year (Internship)

Hands-on application in different hospitals within & outside the state.
During this period they will be conducting a project under the supervision of a guide.

Students will be able to:

  • Practice, enhance & strengthen their skills.
  • Collect, analyze, interpret data & write a project report.

Course of the study

  • Theoretical knowledge: Lecture, demonstration, group discussion, guest lecturer, assignments, case studies Seminars & presentations.
  • Practical skills: Health camps, Hospital postings, Project works, Case presentation & Internship.
