World Heritage Week, 2018

Sohra November 22: With the aim and objective to increase awareness and encourage students about the preservation of the cultural heritages, monuments and stately homes of the state, the Department of Tourism and Travel Management of Martin Luther Christian University commemorated the World Heritage Week, 2018 by organising a Heritage Walk in Sohra on 22 November 2018. The Heritage Walk, started with a visit to the Nongsawlia Presbyterian Church, one of the oldest Presbyterian churches in NE India, established in 1846 by the Welsh missionaries. The remnants of the first church building lie on the hill of the present Nongsawlia Presbyterian Church Cemetery. This building was destroyed by the great earthquake of June 1897, and a new church building was built in 1898.

The Pastor incharge of the Church, Rev R Kharkrang gave a brief introduction to the vast history of the Welsh Missionary work in Khasi Hills, and answered queries by the students regarding the church building history. He also took the students to the Nongsawlia Presbyterian Church Cemetery on which the wife of Thomas Jones, Anne Jones was laid to rest.

The students also visited the Thomas Jones School of Mission, which was established in Nongsawlia in 1886 in memory of Rev Thomas Jones, known also as the father of the Khasi alphabet, who came to the Khasi Hills in 1841.

After the School, the students then visited the present Sohra Police station which was built on the same grounds which held the police lockup during British Rule. This building included and office and one small lockup, probably for temporary arrests.

The students and faculty alike found the tour exceptionally educational and also important in understanding our culture and history, and doing their best to preserve it.
