Awareness on Ill Effects of Fire Crackers

Shillong October 10: The Department of Environment and Traditional Ecosystems of Martin Luther Christian University, Shillong organised an Awareness programme on the “Ill effects of Fire crackers” today October 10, 2017 for the students of R.B. Anoopchand Hindi Secondary Schools, Keating Road, Shillong and Jail Road Boys’ Higher Secondary School, Jail Road, Shillong to spread awareness about the hazardous impact of firecracker bursting and its accompanying pollution.

The awareness campaign on the ill effects of firecrackers is an important component of the UGC syllabus for the under-graduate courses all over country as mandated by the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India.

The Head of the Department of Environment & Traditional Ecosystems, MLCU delved in to the origin and history of firecrackers in the world and its subsequent journey through the centuries. He enlightened the students about the level of air pollution that prevailed after Diwali last year in Delhi. It rose to such an alarming level that it invited the intervention of the highest court of the land. He also informed the gathering about the ban imposed by the Supreme Court on the sale of fire crackers in Delhi this year.

The Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate students of the Department made elaborate and powerful presentations to drive home the message of the harmful effects of bursting of fire crackers on the environment, human health, plants and animals and other major pitfalls associated with it. They quoted relevant statistics to highlight the gravity of the situation.

An open Quiz competition was also held for the school students on the topics of the presentations that were given.
