Decennium of Excellence

Shillong June 9: Martin Luther Christian University, has completed ten years of its establishment and its contribution to society through education. Today the 9th of June, 2017, the University kick started the celebration to commemorate MLCU’s decade long existence as one of the best institutes for higher education in the State. The event, “Decennium of Excellence” was held at Anton Hall, Laitumkhrah and was inaugurated in the presence of the Chancellor of the University, Dr. GC Kharkongor, the Vice Chancellor Mr. RG Lyngdoh, other invitees, students, faculty and staff of the University.

Martin Luther Christian University was created by Act No. 11 of 2005 of the Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya and received the assent of the Governor on July 06, 2005. The Government of Meghalaya issued the Gazette Notification on February 22nd 2006. The creation of the University is in accordance with the University Grant Commission Act, 1956 under Section 2(f) and the University is empowered to grant degrees under Section 22 of the UGC Act.

While speaking at the event the Chancellor, Dr. GC Kharkongor talked at length about the ethos on which the University was formed and how these values and ethos are still being practiced. He added that the University has come a long way since its inception in 2006.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, RG Lyngdoh said that gathering young minds together in such an occasion is very apt, as the University is all for creating a space for young minds to develop themselves and in turn develop the society.


An inter school quiz competition was held, in which St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, Hill Crest Higher Secondary School, Laban Presbyterian Higher Secondary School and BSF Higher Secondary School participated.

After five rounds of intense questions and answers, BSF Higher Secondary School secured the highest points and was adjudged the winner of the quiz, while St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School came second and Laban Presbyterian Higher Secondary School came third.

An Inter Departmental Sketching Competition was also held for the students of the University and the sketches were later displayed for the audience in the hall.


Later in the afternoon, the Department of Fine Arts gave a wonderful and melodious musical performance, where the students of the department performed songs from different kinds of genres of Music which also included original music by the students and also the faculty.
