Orientation Program on Disability for MLCU students
Shillong March 31: With the objective to create awareness and to sensitise the youth about the different types of disabilities, on prevention and early detection of childhood disability, Martin Luther Christian University today hosted an orientation program on Disability for college students, at the University campus.
This orientation program was initiated by the office of the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, GoM in collaboration with MLCU. An approximate of 140 students from the different departments of the University attended the orientation program. Also present was the Assistant Commissioner for People with Disability, Meghalaya,Shillong and faculty of the University.
The resource person of the day was Mr. RC Nitnaware, Faculty and Officer incharge, National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped Regional Centre, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, and he gave a very detailed presentation on the different types of Disabilities both physical and mental, schemes and Acts concerning people with disabilities and various other issues.
Mr. Nitnaware informed the students about the different types of disabilities which are 21 in total, and spoke in detail about the prevention and early detection of disabilities in children right from their birth. He said that taking care to check on the children right from an early age about their motor skills, hearing and vision skills, etc can help prevent disabilities in children.
He also named various Acts and schemes that have been constituted for the benefit of the people with disability, they include, Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), Persons with Disability Act 1995 (under revision), National Trust Act, 1999 , RTE – 2010.
