March 21, 2017: With the objective to inform the various communities around us about the different aspects of Social Work and Social Workers, the department of Social Work from Martin Luther Christian University today observed World Social Work Day at Sohbar Village, Shella, Bholaghanj Block, East Khasi Hills.
The department with approximately 220 students along with 9 faculty traveled to the village and organised a special event which included role plays, songs and cultural dances.
While speaking to the Acting HOD, H. S Dawnthingla, she informed that prior to this day two batches of students have had their mandatory community camp in this village and hence it was apt that the World Social Work Day was celebrated in this village.
Keeping in mind the global theme of the day which is "promoting community and environmental stability", the students presented two role plays. One was a non verbal play about the various functions that a social worker carries out in a society. A social worker can lend a helping hand to the abuse, bring about positive mindset regarding education and healthy lifestyles among many other functions.
The second play was about cleanliness and specially the use of proper sanitation.
Speaking at the event the Sirdar of the area Mr. S Lyngskor, said that the village has been very lucky and privileged that the University had chosen them to visit this year. And he added that both the students and the villagers have learnt a great deal from each other. He continued that this exchange of culture and ideas should continue among the villagers and the Department.
